Roads can be dangerous especially for children. As a parent all you wish for is your children to grow up healthy and safe and to fulfill their dreams.
The truth is that children can get hurt at any time and that child abduction and kidnapping attempts are happening and it seems like it’s occurring more than ever.
As children grow they will start walking around more busy areas, walk to school or even start going out with friends. We may feel helpless as parents since we can’t protect our children from everything and at any time. That is why the best thing you can do for your children is to teach them general safety knowledge or to take them to a safety self defense for children class where a professional can cover the basic general safety information and teach them self-defence skills that will last them a lifetime. In the spirit of helping all the kids walk in peace we’ve compiled a few steps to help ensure the safety of your children while they are out and about.
Steps:
- Help your children memorize their full name, address and telephone number.
- Teach your children how and when to use the emergency phone number (000 in Australia, 911 in America – make sure you and your children know the local number).
- Insist that they do not talk to strangers and to not accept food or gifts from them.
- Instruct them not to tell anyone if they are home alone.
- Decide which are the safest routes between home and school.
- Highlight the safest places on the route and places that must be avoided.
- Show your child road signs and explain what they mean.
- Show your child a neighbor’s home that you trust where they can go if/when they are in danger.
- Open discussions with your children about drugs and other dangers.
- Encourage your children to talk to an adult they trust if something is wrong.
- Enroll them in a self-defence program. Self-defence is about being aware of your surroundings, leaving before a problem erupts, listening to your gut, using a confident voice and carrying yourself with confidence.
