What is VoIP Phone?
VoIP phone is a digital telephone service that uses a computer connection instead of regular phone lines to make and receive calls. VoIP stands for Voice over Internet Protocol. It works by transmitting voices as data packets across the internet, which saves on long-distance charges. You need a high-speed internet connection to use VoIP, but you don’t need an extra phone line.
How do you set up a VoIP Phone?
There are many options for setting up your own private branch exchange (PBX) at home with the right equipment and dedication to doing so. Here are the basics of setting up a home PBX system:
1. Choose your strategy:
You have three options to set up a VoIP phone for home. If you already have a high-speed internet connection at home, you may use your existing internet service to set up a VoIP phone service.
2. Choose your hardware:
To install your own PBX or VoIP solution, you’ll need some hardware equipment and software. You’ll need a server or computer for the main control station, a modem or network card with easier implementation, and an analog phone adapter (ATA) to connect the existing phones to the server.
3. Install the software:
There are many software packages available that enable you to run your phone system. You can purchase a commercial package or find an open-source program. Open-source programs are free; commercial packages require payment.
4. Connect everything and test it out:
Once you have the software installed, connect your hardware to your server using a high-speed network cable. Use a phone line to connect your modem/network card to the analog phone adapter and then plug in all of your telephones into the analog phone adapter. Your installation is complete once you have everything connected and tested out with a call or two on each telephone extension you’ve installed.
