Leasehold berths, which are common in marinas throughout Europe and a few on the UK’s South and East Coasts, Wales, and Inland Waterways, allow the owner to dock their vessel for a certain period of time.
When you purchase a leasehold berth in certain marinas, you are purchasing the right to anchor inside the marina, where you will often work with the marina staff to locate your perfect berth. You will be purchasing a fixed berth number or position at other marinas. For instance, pontoon A Berth 44 or pontoon D72.
The expense of purchasing a lease.
For the time period left on the lease, the price of the lease will usually save money as compared to buying vs. renting. It may be a wonderful method to lock in your berthing fees rather than paying the yearly hikes that marina managers often impose. The sole exception to this is if a berth at an overcrowded marina becomes available for sale, and if you don’t possess a lease, you won’t be able to dock there.
Taxes / VAT on the lease purchase
Depending on which marina the lease is for sale in, there may be additional taxes to pay in addition to the purchase price indicated.
There is no VAT or stamp duty to pay on top of the price stated in the UK.
