Bruce explains that it’s essential that you also check the distance rating of the VHF radio. A 50-mile range radio is ideal for a person who routinely goes into the open water. But if you will stay close to the shoreline, a shorter rating will do. Also, note that transmission between radios is usually in a straight line, making a long antenna crucial.
“Essentially, you should choose a long antenna that will allow transmission over a long distance with your system. Even better, some modern models can preset the locations you love visiting. This feature comes in quite handy if you have a secret place where you love chilling or fishing.”
