Cockroaches are high-risk pests in homes. They transmit a number of serious diseases, including salmonella, dysentery, gastroenteritis and typhus. The risk is particularly high in homes inhabited by children, the elderly and sick people. Cockroach droppings are also the cause of eczema and asthma.
In addition to the health risks, cockroaches are unsightly pests to have around the house. They are not only disturbing to look at, they produce an odor that infects the foods and objects it comes into contact with Pest Control. Cockroaches can reproduce quickly and are very hardy. A quick response is essential to make sure a cockroach infestation doesn’t root or spread to adjacent properties.
Signs of a cockroach problem
There are three common species that affect the home:
German cockroach 12-15mm Brown in color with 2 dark bands on the chest. The wings completely cover the abdomen or are slightly longer in both sexes, nevertheless they prefer to move quickly or climb.
Oriental cockroach 20-30mm Variable in color between dark brown and black. The wings are reduced to sketches in the female, while in the male they cover ¾ of the abdomen; both sexes prefer to move quickly and climb.
American cockroach 20-30mm Also known as Periplaneta Americana, the American cockroach is reddish brown in color and has a pale yellow zone around the perimeter of the pronotum (dorsal part). These cockroaches are generally found in dark, quiet and very humid areas. Both species tend to be found in larger quantities in the kitchen or where food is stored.
Typical signs of a cockroach problem are
See live insects – cockroaches are nocturnal and hide during the day. You will see them mostly at night, once the light in the kitchen is on.
Ootecas and skin changes – cockroaches shed their skin 5-8 times as they grow. Droaches – cockroaches leave behind a dust of black droppings less than 1mm thick and of varying lengths.
Odor – rooted infestations of cockroaches produce an unpleasant, musty odor.
Damage – cockroaches attack organic goods, including books and leather.
How to keep cockroaches away
Sealing the access points will prevent cockroaches from entering the house. The main hazards are cracks under doors and around pipes outside or adjacent properties. Also seal openings where cockroaches might hide – cockroaches are nocturnal and during the day they hide in cracks and crevices in walls, around baseboards or behind electrical outlets. The most effective way to control cockroaches is to deny them food and water:
– Store food in sealed containers or plastic bags
– Eliminate all leftover and spilled food immediately
– Remove food scraps under refrigerators and appliances
– Clean the dishes and cutlery used immediately
– Eliminate pet food, water and litter at night
– Store waste or compost in sealed bins
– Beware of used diapers or dirty clothes
– Do not leave liquids in sinks or buckets overnight
In our opinion, electromagnetic or ultrasonic repellents do not work with cockroaches and are not recommended for avoiding or controlling cockroach infestations.
How to get rid of cockroaches
If left untreated, cockroaches quickly settle in large numbers and will spread to adjacent properties. There are a number of insecticidal products on the market, but an ingrained cockroach problem often requires professional pest control to ensure the problem doesn’t recur. Professional Cockroach Control Cockroaches are very resilient, and while commercial insecticidal products can treat the immediate problem, a long-lasting cockroach problem often requires treatment by a Pest Control Services.
