By this Friday, season 3 of Captain’s Log will have come to an end. It was an interesting season as Jon Gowet and Omar Parker delve more into Star Trek analysis and behind the scenes stories coming from their filmmaking history. I am a long term Trekkie and I even learned a lot from their unique perspective.
Captain’s Log began as a YouTube series during the pandemic, and over time developed a large following. Across 3 channels they held over 250,000 subscribers before deciding to switch to a web series. They stated this was due to numerous copyright strikes from Paramount in relation to using parts of their footage. Sometimes they streamed games like Star Trek Online on the channel, other times they analyzed episodes, and sometimes they were just funny but they always kept the content varied.
For those who aren’t familiar with the channel
Jonathan Gower is a lifelong trekkie. Growing up in the small town of Belgrade, Montana. He has been a loyal viewer and fan since he was a small child. Gower’s room is decorated with merchandise and memorabilia from the franchise. But Gower is much more than a dedicated fan. He has produced numerous films including a short film called Salta, which was an official selection of Tribeca Film Festival.
Omar Parker is a producing prodigy, having produced short films that premiered at Berlin, Cannes, Sundance, Tribeca, and Tiff. He was one of the youngest producers to be in competition for a Palme in any category at Cannes. Parker was nineteen at the time. Even more amazing, he was one of the first individuals to ever be a producer on two separate Sundance shorts both in competition at the same time. Parker has also made numerous feature films. The Burying Party (2018) is currently available for streaming on Amazon Prime. Luz (2019) is currently available for streaming on Shudder. Both films were also festival darlings.
Both wanted to attempt more commercial content so with the help of producer Charlie Burt they began a Star Trek based content channel.
Unfortunately for their loyal fanbase
It seems the series is coming to an end. Gower stated in the latest video, “There really aren’t many other things to cover at this point, in the realm of what we do. It won’t be the end though, you’ll see more of us soon. but it may be in a different format.” The duo started a big part of the series ending as it was never meant to last. To them it was mainly a boredom project while stuck in quarantine. So it is natural that as vaccinations roll out and the country opens up, the series is coming to an end. As upsetting as that is.
One way or another I think we all are very excited to see what the duo will do next. We know they have talked about possibly making a television show in the future so maybe that could be the next format. I’m sure time will tell us all.
