Summer is in full swing as temperatures rise across the country. The heat is definitely on, and dogs are feeling it. Since they release heat by panting and through their paws (Dogs can’t sweat), it’s difficult for them to cool off. Dogs get easily overheated, so they need help from you to stay healthy in the heat. So, the next time you want to go for a hike with Fido, you might find swimming to be better for him. Here, you’ll find five tips for keeping your dog cool in the heat.
- Dogs’ paws and hot asphalt don’t mix. Keep Fido’s cool by walking in the grass or putting on doggie booties.
- Give your pup plenty of water and shade. If your pooch gets dehydrated, he may suffer from heatstroke.
- Exercise/walk Fido in the early morning or after sundown. Those are the times when it’s the coolest.
- Let your dog dig holes. The dirt is cooling your pet.
- Find other things to do. As mentioned, rather than taking a hike, go swimming instead.
