The colors will be swirling absolutely on their own, just like a magical feat! This is basically linked to the concept of surface tensions. The food coloring will remain on the surface initially although the soap may lead to a chemical reaction that ends up breaking the entire surface tension in question.

There are some other fun experiments that can also be done at home with your child. You can always choose the Lava Lamp experiment where children learn about density and the fact that food coloring and oil with water do not mix. You may add in something like an antacid tablet for double the fun and bubbles start flowing like a somewhat funky lava lamp! You can also get together with your kid for creating a homemade sundial. You will need a stick, dowel, marker, and paper plate for this purpose. Mark the dowel’s shadow position each hour and you will get ample scope to teach your child about the rotation of the Earth.
