At the start of the school year, you risk hearing the fateful question: “and you, what did you do during the holidays?” “. Here are ten good reasons which will allow you to answer: “I wrote and worked on my novel”.
1. You finally have time to write
This is the most obvious reason. How many authors say they “never have time” to practice their art or work on their projects? Holidays are ideal for taking the time to write each day, to shape your characters or to proofread your texts to improve them.
2. You can write anywhere
You are one of the creators with the most freedom in your work environment. Put yourself in the shoes of an organist or a sculptor! They don’t have your chance. Not only does writing take time, but anyone can write where they want, when they want. Whether you are at the beach, in the mountains, in a bar or at home.
3. Holidays that are too relaxing are overrated
Nice, your selfie in front of a turquoise sea! Super interesting, your feet on the beach! No. We’re kidding. Nobody likes it. Your friends click like out of politeness. Those who have themselves gone on vacation will post the same ones. Those who haven’t left will get depressed because of you!
Treat your acquaintances this year: take a picture of your notebooks, your screen, your manuscript, your proofreading. You will inspire anyone who loves to write. And those who don’t care will not get depressed.
4. The “adventurous” holidays are (also) overrated
It was already at the time of the publication of Plateforme, by Michel Houellebecq. And this novel is already fifteen years old. All vacations intended to prove that you are an extreme tourist are considered trivial (or suspicious: see Platform).
Do you want to impress your colleagues or classmates? We bring you the latest trendy snobbery: be boring this year. Write. Read. Work on your works. Study authors and writings that you admire. Get inspiration from Ghostwriter Inside. Sharpen your quill and do great things with it.
5. Either way, you are broke
Or you want to save money. A vacation spent with a cocktail in hand halfway around the world is not for you. Expensive adventures for thrill-seeking tourists are out of your reach. You are in the last category: all those who do not leave or limit themselves.
So much the better! Reading and writing cost (almost) nothing and are a great way to pass the time. Reading is the only way to live multiple lives at the same time. Writing helps create different lives. Who needs to spend a fortune on a vacation knowing this?
6. The break with your daily life is a source of inspiration
You can embark on a mountain hike abroad. Bask in the sun with a cocktail in your hand. Or enjoy the time that passes, at home, under your duvet. Either way, you’re breaking your daily routine.
Your life is no longer tuned to your study or work clock for a short time, and this forces you to organize yourself differently. Chances are, these changes will stimulate your imagination and curiosity.
7. Writing is sexy (we believe it)
We already know that reading is sexy. The Hot dudes reading Instagram account immediately comes to mind. A recent study published by MyBae, a dating site, highlights the importance of reading as a “sexy” activity. From the analysis of the keywords associated with each user profile, MyBae makes the following observation:
The more You Read, the more attractive You are to Your potentiel Partner.
If reading is so sexy, we can imagine that writing is too. When will you have a Hot dudes writing Instagram account?
8. Writing can make dating easier
An author once confided to us that he made no secret of his literary ambitions for this reason. It wasn’t edited and didn’t care. This author loved to write, meet new people, travel, and then listen and tell stories.
Say you write, and everyone will want to take a chance at becoming immortal through your quill. You will hear lots of inspiring anecdotes and surely meet interesting people!
9. To make your dream come true
Do you dream of becoming a writer respected for his works? To write stories that will mark your readership? We have good news and bad news.
The bad news is that it takes time, effort, work. None of the authors you like, admire, or who are successful have reached their level without it.
The good news is, it’s up to you, and how you spend your time. If writing beautiful works is your dream, you can devote yourself to it whenever you have time.
10. Other authors have done it before you
You were born in 1930. After dissolving studies, a series of odd jobs and the war (during which you were taken prisoner in Asia), you found a family. Your financial situation? The fifth reason on this list speaks volumes to you. But you are incredibly lucky to have two weeks off this year.
What are you doing?
This is the story of JG Ballard, one of the most recognized British writers of the 20th century. He wrote his first novel during his two weeks off. His work resulted in a publication and allowed him to embark on the path of professional writer he had dreamed of until now.
